DIY: Scalloped Obi Belt
Here’s a DIY post in anticipation of warm spring weather in London, which is coming any day now I swear. I bought a leather “obi” (Japanese sash) belt at a car-boot sale, originally from Topshop, and decided to modify it by cutting a scalloped edge.
Wooden bird brooch: Anna Wiscombe
Shoes: Debenhams. I love pumps with cut-work that let some air in.
I got the idea to make a scalloped edge because the belt is a thin, flat piece of leather with no stitching, and I know that leather doesn’t fray or need to be edged. It will work with any leather belt which is thin enough to cut with scissors. Note that in addition to cutting the scalloped shape I also cut the belt a bit narrower..
1. Draw a series of semi-circles touching at their widest point, on the reverse of the belt. Do this by tracing the shape of a round object like a plastic lid or a large coin. I used a spice lid, and made sure that each semi-circle just skimmed where the edge of the belt would be so that they were all in line.
2. Carefully cut out the semi-circle scallops with some sharp scissors. DONE!

Here I have worn my new scalloped belt with two quite similar outfits which I was struggling to tie together. I took these photos last summer but never got round to sharing them.
The horse brooch is actually one I made. Believe it or not I used to run a costume jewellery label and sold my stuff in shops around South Africa. My label was called Suzy Pedigree but I gave it up when I moved to London. I even had a scroll-saw for cutting wood and perspex and had some pieces featured in magazines like Elle South Africa which was fun. The only thing left on the internet about it is a very old Facebook page. Go there if you want to have a look at the pics and have a laugh but don’t bother joining the page because it hasn’t been updated in at least 4 years!

Lastly, I have been nominated for a small blog award and am currently in 3rd place. If you enjoy my blog then please do go over and vote before this month ends! You don’t even need to enter your details just tick and click. Thanks!
